Vidal was ahead of his time with the Sino-Japanese comment. It’s funny to see the same yellow peril rhetoric directed against Japan in the 80’s being used now against the Chinese. Even the debt thing. Incidentally, Japan owns almost as big a share of our national debt as China-nowhere near the amount owned by the American public, of course.

This essay was written in 1986, at which point white panic about Japanese domination were already standard fare in America, so I don’t think there’s any special prescience to it. Vincent Chin had already been murdered four years before that, for example.
Also, the entire essay is basically an extended exercise in papering over raw anti-Semitism with a very very thin veneer of anti-Zionism or anti-imperialism. Vidal was a bigot of the old school (and an apologist for child rape too). Like the tag says, fuck that guy.
