The real gun crisis — which is created and maintained by capitalism and white supremacy — continues to rage on without any attention from media or politicians. Props to Susie Cagle for drawing a little more attention to it.

By equating whiteness and gentrification, one assumes a certain homogeneity amongst white people. While certainly privileged as a group in this society, it would be ridiculous to say that a white man moving to Oakland from Blackhawk and a white transwoman from Antioch posses the same privileges in this society. More pertinent to the questions of development and gentrification, it cannot be said that every white person has the same class values and interests. Many of the recent migrants to Oakland (both the déclassé from San Francisco and the youth fleeing the suburbs), can be said to carry a particular set of middle class values that is more of a contribution to the development (in the pejorative sense) of the neighborhood than their race. These values–a concern for property values, an antipathy to street life, homeownership, civic-mindedness, complicity with the policing apparatus, interest in urban beautification, etc.–provide the social conditions for the development of a neighborhood. These values are held across race lines.

How bad are things in the Oakland Police Department? The total count of 44 officers being disciplined represents almost 10% of the total active force.

And this move is best understood as a desperate attempt to avoid the entire department being placed under federal receivership, something that could happen soon after 10 years of OPD’s ongoing failure to reform itself and meet conditions placed on it by the courts after a series of misconduct and brutality cases.

So in other words: pretty bad.

A good, thoughtful and frankly very mild critique of black bloc, which naturally has provoked howls of outrage because how dare you question Diversity of Tactics you horrible Stalinist you!

June 2012: Activists in Oakland try (and fail) to shut down a conference on how to stop child sex trafficking. In their own words:

On Wednesday, June 13th, 2012, queers and hookers and other bad bitches fucked up the H.E.A.T. Watch conference. H.E.A.T. Watch is an ongoing campaign facilitated by the Alameda County District Attorney, The City of Oakland, the OPD, and a few select piece-of-shit non-profits.

We set out with the intentions of shutting the fucker down and started the event with the distribution of some dope literature, some inflammatory speeches, the harassment of mainstream media and of course, the all-out taunting of the police. It got taken a step further when the crowd attempted to enter the lobby of the Marriott Convention Center. This all resulted in a rumble with the pigs, the vandalized facade of the convention center entrance with eggs and paint, and a march to and from Oscar Grant Plaza. We would say that this was a nice way to spend an afternoon and, for a brief moment, fulfilled our goal of shutting the fucker down.
